I'm seeking input regarding the 2011 Toyota Tundra, 4.6L V8 truck. Or just about truck ownership in general.

What are the hidden gotchas (besides the obvious MPG issue)? What are the hidden benefits? Do you have any experience with Tundras, Toyotas, or Trucks in general?

I'm in the market in the near future, and I want to make sure I've done my due diligence.

Thanks.

I have experience with Toyota of Richardson.

They suck. Don't go to them.

1) If you borrow your Dad's truck for the weekend of prom and take it to the beach, clean the sand and footprints off the dashboard before you return it to him Sunday evening.

2) Driving standard is fun on occasion, but in very few cases is it a good idea to force yourself to do so at all times.

3) You will be asked to help people move. I'm sure you know this.

4) You will be asked to pull people out of ditches and beaches when they get stuck. You may not have known this.

#1: My dad is mostly just likely to give me a hard time about owning a truck in the first place. I fully expect a pair of boots for Christmas. Or maybe a gun rack. But your story sounds better. ;P

#2: I'm definitely looking at automatic. Manual is a lot of fun in the mini, as a little sports car. But the feel wouldn't be the same in a truck, so I'll go for the convenience.

#3/4: I definitely expect to be asked to help people move. I suppose that's the nature of it. But considering how many people have helped me move in the past, I'm happy to return the favor. I didn't even think about the ditch/beach thing. I'm guessing that the first few times, I'll enjoy being able to help. But if that ends up being frequent (which seems unlikely), I'd probably get cranky about it. So, fingers crossed there.

Good tips. Thanks!

Also, being otherwise out of the loop, I'll take this opportunity to say that I hope you're doing well.

Addendum: Sometimes they will ask Beth if they can borrow your services, instead of you.

Noted. I expect that I'll follow this advice. There are plenty of other toyota dealerships around that will be happy to try and fuck me over. ;P

For sure, they all work hard at it. ToR tried to insist (via multiple service reps, too) that brake cleaning and adjustment is recommended maintenance every 5k miles. They also often fail to do the car wash after the oil change. Just not very high quality. Toyota of Plano has done me right both times so far, aside from the part where, like every other dealership, they overcharge.

Given what you presently drive, you'll probably want to get a convertible version.

I had a Nissan XE (small pickup) from 1997 to 2006. Didn't have a single problem until the transmission started to go at the end of the 2006. Could've repaired it, but opted for a new car instead.

Although it wasn't a huge truck, the bed was large enough to haul most anything I needed.

I highly recommend Don Davis Toyota in Arlington. Been using Don Davis Auto Group (dondavisautogroup.com) since I got my truck (and bought my Scion from them, too). My parents have used Don Davis since before I started to drive, and still do, to this day.

They even bought my pickup back and applied it toward my down payment for the Scion.

They look best in white.

Unless you need massive towing power or a big VROOM sound or are afraid the other cowboys are going to laugh at you, get a V6 instead of the V8; the gas savings aren't a whole lot, but it helps. And every little bit helps, because holy Moses trucks eat a lot of gas.

I'm not sure how set you are on buying new, but there are a BUNCH of used, er, "pre-owned" out there still in great condition with price tags often 10k lower than new. However, side curtain airbags (and a few other safety features) didn't start being offered until 2007, and they are harder to find the older the truck model (mine have them but it was a hell of a search). I *think* they became standard in the Tundras in 2010.

When you call to see if a certain truck you saw advertised is available, talk directly to the new or used department. The internet department doesn't know crap, and their in-stock listings can be a week old. Fuck you internet departments. I was basically bait-and-switched by the internet departments of Toyota of Dallas, John Eagle Sport City Toyota, and Toyota of Irving. Cowboy Toyota, however, were great to work with; my salesguy was John Petro.

When I was looking I also checked out the Tacomas, which had slightly better gas mileage and similar safety ratings. However, as one salesperson put it, they "hold onto their resale value" -- so that's good as a trade in, but if you're looking to buy used it's not exactly a benefit.

Are you looking to replace your mini? If so, why?

yes. It's out of warranty in 6 weeks, and I don't feel comfortable paying on it while not having coverage for repairs. It's already required too much work for my taste, and that seems to fit the pattern I've seen with other mini's as well. Basically, it's getting more expensive and risky to own, and I don't rust it enough to take that risk.
